Settings Overview

Page Contents

This page will serve as an explanation of every setting seen in-game. Any setting can be changed in the menu or mid-run, unless if noted otherwise.

Settings will be ordered based on how they are seen on update 100. On older versions (update 99) they may be ordered differently, or may not be present at all.

A separate page for stats will be added at a later date.

Audio

1. Master Volume
- Slider that controls all volume in the game.

2. Music Volume
- Slider that controls the sound of music in the game.
- Can be used to tell when a boss becomes active if boss intros are disabled, or tell when a boss is killed off-screen.

3. Ambience Volume
- Slider that controls the sound of ambience volume in the game.
- Ambience noises has no relation to gameplay whatsoever, thus can be muted without worry.

4. 3D Sound
- A toggle to enable or disable if 3D sound is being used.
- If enabled then sound will be stereo audio. This differentiates between left/right for directional sound cues, though not upwards/downwards.
- If disabled then sound will be mono audio. This is best used as an option if one headphone is broken or for accessibility if hard of hearing on one side.

Video

1. Fullscreen
- Toggles how the display should behave.
- Fullscreen will minimize the game if tabbed out of, but dedicates more resources to the application. Best for performance.
- Borderless runs like windowed mode but appears like fullscreen, allowing for tabbing out without minimizing. Best for convenience.
- Windowed mode can adjust size and placement on the screen freely, gameplay will always maintain a consistent aspect ratio. Be cautious of accidentally closing out the program as there is no confirmation popup. (Mouselock setting under 'Controls' can help prevent this.)

2. VSync
- Toggles vsync on or off.
- This is used to help prevent screen tearing.

3. Window Scale
- Automatically adjusts the screen when in windowed mode.
- Will adjust window sizes (1x, 2x, 3x, 4x and Auto) to exactly match the aspect ratio, which makes any side art not visible.
- This will choose what window size the game will be launched with as well.

4. Framerate
- Toggles between 30, 60, 90 and 120 FPS.
- Default is 30 FPS, with other FPS allowing for smoother gameplay.
- Cannot be changed mid-run, only through the main menu settings.
- Only 30 and 60 FPS may be used on daily and weekly challenges.

5. Aspect Ratio
- Toggles between 4:3, 16:9, 16:10, 21:9 and Auto.
- Default is 4:3, with other aspect ratios allowing for more of the screen to be seen.
- Daily/weekly challenges only allow for 4:3. Entering either mode will automatically change the aspect ratio.

6. Crosshair
- Toggles between 9 different crosshairs for the cursor to use.

7. Side Art
- Selects which side art appears in game.
- Options 1-3 has a vault symbol in variants of brown, purple and green.
- Options 4-6 has a crown symbol in variants of brown, purple and green.
- Option 7 is Y.V.'s logo in gold with a red background.
- Option 8 is a blue IDPD pattern featuring a Grunt, Inspector and Shielder.
- Option 9 is Cuz's logo in gold with a purple background.

8. Screenshake
- Slider that toggles the intensity of screenshake.
- Shooting any weapon will cause the screen to shake, with heavier hitting weapons shaking the screen more. Explosions also affect screen shaking.
- Having it on 0% will disable screenshake completely.
- While 100% is visually the max of sliders, screenshake can be toggled up to 200% by repeatedly pressing right on keyboard/controller. This is an easter egg commonly seen in Vlambeer & JW titles.

9. Freeze Frames
- Slider that toggles the effects of freezeframes.
- Hitting enemies will cause temporary hitlag to give the feeling of more impact.
- This has some utility (especially in lategame) where it can create artificial lag to give more reaction time.

10. Hide hud
- Toggles whether hud icons should be shown or not.
- The hud includes all overlay icons; HP, rad level, held weapons, ammo levels, mutations and in-game timer.
- Specific parts of the hud cannot be individually toggled besides the timer, so keeping the hud on is recommended.

Game

1. Boss Intros
- Toggles whether intro cards should appear when bosses spawn.

2. Play Tutorial
- Enables replaying the tutorial level.
- Cannot be used mid-run, only from main menu settings.

3. Show Timer
- Enables the in-game timer.
- The timer will stop during level transitions and when the game is paused, but will not stop during mutation/crown selection.
- Because of lag the in-game timer will not reflect real time. The further a run goes, the less accurate it may be.

4. Show Area
- Enables the current area on the bottom right, including loop

5. Autopause
- Enables autopausing.
- If enabled the game will automatically pause if tabbed out for any reason.

6. Stream Key
Currently not working and causes crashes on some versions. The game will fail to enable stream key if clicked.
- Enables a stream key which can be used to track data from a run. This can be used to give information to third party programs, such as displaying live run information over Discord.
- If enabled Thronebutt would track any runs privately over 60 runs that could be viewed by signing into the site, which currently is not possible.

7. View Credits
- Opens the credits of the game normally seen after completing a run.
- Cannot be viewed mid-run, only from main menu settings.
- Will not include the end credits theme.

8. Delete Data
- An option to completely wipe save data, counting down from 5.
- Cannot be used mid-run, only from main menu settings.
- Without a save back up there is no way to recover save data. Save editing can restore progress, but not stats.

Controls

1. Gamepad
- Enables controller usage.
- Can only be toggled if a controller is currently connected.
- For first time use on Steam make sure to connect it first through the Steam client. (Steam on left top -> Settings -> Controller)
- NT may not recognize PlayStation controllers, ds4windows can help.

2. Gamepad Style
- Toggle that swaps button layouts between Xbox, PlayStation, Switch and Steam Deck for visual indicators.

3. Cursor
- Toggles between Default, Native and Compatible cursors.
- Default will have the cursor remain within the borders of the game, not overlapping with the side art. It runs at the same FPS as the game.
- Native will have the cursor run at the same framerate at one's own computer system, and will overlap the side art.
- Compatible appears to be functionally the same as native cursor, but slightly smaller.

4. Mouselock
- Toggles whether mouselock is enabled.
- If enabled it will prevent the cursor from leaving the screen, primarily useful for dual monitors or playing windowed mode.
- Only works while actively playing the game, not while on any pause menus.

5. Autoaim
- Only appears if Gamepad is on.
- Slider that determines how much the cursor should autoaim.
- Will shift the cursor to the closest enemy to it automatically to help with aiming.
- While useful in some situations this can reduce the ability to aim at specific enemies, so prioritizing specific threats may be difficult.

6. Rumble
- Only appears if Gamepad is on.
- Slider that determines how much the controller should rumble.

7. Deadzone
- Only appears if Gamepad is on.
- Slider that changes how much sensitivity the joysticks have for input.

8. Movement
- Only appears if Gamepad is on.
- Toggles between classic and precise, with precise giving full 360 degrees of movement.

Change Controls Sub-Menu

'Aim' will appear if a controller is connected, allowing to swap between left handed or right handed layouts.

All other control options are related to keybinds which can be re-bound.
This section will list the defaults for KBM controls. Controllers will differ depending on type.

Unlisted controls cannot be re-bound. Unlisted controls include:

Extra Options Sub-Menu

1. Keyboard
- Toggles KBM recognition while a controller is in use.

2. Mouse Aiming
- Toggle that allows aiming to be done with the mouse instead of joystick while using a controller.

3. Per-Player
- Toggle that enables another sub-menu to change controls for Player's 2-4.
- Adjustable controls for extra players include Autoaim, Rumble, Deadzone, Movement and any controller binding.

Language

Update 100 added built-in localizations for 15 different languages. Language menu cannot be accessed mid-run, only from the main menu. Issues with localizations can be reported through the NT Discord, through the u100-localization-issues forum.

Currently supported languages include English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Polish, BR Portuguese, Russian, Korean, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Japanese, Ukrainian, Turkish & Dutch. Adding custom lang files will also appear on this list.

Pre-u100: There are fan-made translations for certain languages. Placing it in the NT files folder makes it work for vanilla, or the '/loadloc lang' command while in NTT.

Settings File

There are some unlisted settings that can be modified in the files. Before making any edits make a backup of the file in case any mistakes are made.
To access the settings file on Windows press Win+R and paste in '%localappdata%/nuclearthrone'. From here open the file called 'settings.json' with any text editor, such as notepad.
Unlike save file editing, Steam cloud does not have to be turned off to edit the settings file.
Only launch the game after the new settings are saved.

The rest of this section will go over any notable changes that can be applied in-game. Press ctrl+f to quickly search for these settings in the text editor.

Cuz Keybinds is an experimental setting, may not be a permanent feature.
Setting "cuz_swap_mode" to 1.0 will auto-assign hotkeys to Cuz's weapons with keys 1-3, as well as keys 4-6 if taking the Arsenal ultra.
Setting the value to 2.0 will match the weapons in order of HUD slot order.
Another setting called "cuz_show_swap_for" will temporarily show the weapon sprite above Cuz's head with its current ammo level when swapping weapons. Default value is set at 20.0 (frames), setting it to 0.0 will disable it.

Rad Attract was an experimental setting in the 2025 openbeta with the following descriptions:
- Modern: "Rads wiggle around obstacles somewhat"
- Classic: "Rads get stuck at corners often."
- Fast: "Looks like 'classic', but takes less CPU. Rads start sliding around corners at max level."
The setting "rad_attraction_mode" is on 1.0 by default for Modern (also known as Kind). Changing the value to 0.0 will change to Classic, while 2.0 will change it to Fast.

NTT Pixel Mode is a setting that smooths pixelated edges making them appear softer.
"resolution_scale" can be changed to 1.0 (default), 2.0, 3.0 and 4.0
An easy to see example of pixel scaling is seen with crossbow sights:

Click for full size

NTT Outlines can be enabled in vanilla.
Changing "outlines" to 1.0 will enable it in-game, even in singleplayer. There is also a "colors" option which decides what outline each player should be, in order from 1st to 4th player. Colors need to be in decimal format, useful color picker.

NTT Ultra Modes can be enabled in vanilla as well.
There is an empty field next to "ultras". There are three options effecting what ultras are seen while playing co-op:
- "Coop": The default, only shows the co-op ultras.
- "Own": Only shows character-specific ultras.
- "All": Gives the choice between coop or own ultras; both cannot be picked.
